Swedish citizenship test 2026: what to know before you prepare

What is the Swedish citizenship test?

The Swedish citizenship test is a knowledge test connected to the new citizenship requirements. UHR, the Swedish Council for Higher Education, is responsible for the test. The first part to be introduced is about basic knowledge of Swedish society. The Swedish language test will be introduced later.

Migrationsverket is responsible for assessing citizenship applications and deciding who is directed to register for the test. UHR states that it will only be possible to register after receiving a letter from Migrationsverket.

What is known about the format?

• The first test is planned for 15 August 2026 in Stockholm.
• The actual test time is 90 minutes.
• The test will consist of about 60 questions.
• The questions are multiple-choice questions with four answer options, where one answer is correct.
• The test is in Swedish and is written on paper.
• The test in August 2026 is described as a trial test and will be free of charge.

What should you study?

UHR has published study material about Swedish society that can be used when preparing for the test. The material is called Sverige i fokus and was produced by UHR together with Skolverket. It is the main public study material to use when you start preparing.

• Sweden as a country, including geography, climate, population and natural resources.
• Democracy, elections, political institutions and how Sweden is governed.
• Law, rights, media, human rights and discrimination.
• Working life, private finances, welfare and modern Swedish history.
• Sweden in the world, religion, traditions and public holidays.

How to prepare without feeling overwhelmed

A good preparation plan does not have to be complicated. Start by reading one chapter at a time. After each chapter, practise with questions so you can see what you remember. When you answer incorrectly, read the explanation and return to the part of the material that needs more review.

• Read the chapter and focus on the main concepts.
• Practise chapter questions soon after reading.
• Review mistakes calmly and use explanations to understand why the correct answer is right.
• Repeat weak areas before moving on.
• Use mock tests later, when you have practised several chapters.
